MORECCU: Molten salt regeneration for carbon capture and utilization [GA: 23249]
The idea for the project called MoReCCU, or Molten Salt Regeneration for Carbon Capture and Utilization, was born from the need to maximise resource efficiency. UP Catalyst, project lead, is using the Molten Salt Carbon Capture and Electrochemical Transformation (MSCC-ET) method to give CO2 a green purpose and transform it into valuable carbon materials. The European consortium, consisting of renowned industry and academic experts, aims to optimise the MSCC-ET technology in order to meet higher sustainability standards. Within the MoReCCU project, the innovative molten salt regeneration system will be designed, constructed and implemented into the UP Catalyst carbon nanomaterials and graphite synthesis reactors. The new automated system will regenerate the molten salt by removing solid product and impurities from the electrolyte mixture. This will further improve the quality of the produced carbon through sustainable practices. Molten salt regeneration is an ideal alternative to salt mining that not only solves environmental issues but also enhances vital production factors such as energy efficiency.
